Article Synopsis
  • * A case report highlights a male in his 60s who experienced unusual swelling of one side of his tongue due to angioedema, emphasizing the need for quick recognition of this condition for effective treatment.
  • * This case is noteworthy as it is one of the few documented instances in English literature and the first from Africa, pointing to the possibility of either its rarity or under-reporting in the region, where ACE inhibitors are frequently prescribed.

Introduction: Inflammation-induced remodelling of gestational tissues that underpins spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB, delivery < 37 weeks' gestation) may vary by race and context. To explore relationships between markers of these pathological processes, we (a) characterised the cervicovaginal fluid (CVF) cytokine profiles of pregnant South African women at risk of PTB; (b) determined CVF matrix-metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and its regulator tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1); and (c) explored the predictive potential of these markers for sPTB.

Method Of Study: The concentrations of 10 inflammatory cytokines and MMP-9 and TIMP-1 were determined by ELISA in CVF samples from 47 non-labouring women at high risk of PTB.

Protected and conserved areas (PCAs) are key ecosystem management tools for conserving biodiversity and sustaining ecosystem services and social cobenefits. As countries adopt a 30% target for protection of land and sea under the Global Biodiversity Framework of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, a critical question emerging is, which 30%? A risk-based answer to this question is that the 30% that returns the greatest reductions in risks of species extinction and ecosystem collapse should be protected. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List protocols provide practical methods for assessing these risks.

We investigated gluteal (GSAT) and abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (ASAT) DNA methylation of FKBP5 in response to a 12-week intervention in African women with obesity, as well as the effect of the rs1360780 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) on FKBP5 methylation, gene expression and post-exercise training adaptations in obesity and metabolic related parameters. Exercise (n = 19) participants underwent 12-weeks of supervised aerobic and resistance training while controls (n = 12) continued their usual behaviours. FKBP5 methylation was measured in GSAT and ASAT using pyrosequencing.

Nine distinct papillomaviruses (Lambdapapillomavirus) have been described in domestic and nondomestic cats, but not in cheetahs. These viruses have been associated with cutaneous papillomas or plaques, bowenoid carcinomas, feline cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), feline sarcoids, and oral (often sublingual) papillomas. Fourteen cheetahs from the AfriCat foundation (Namibia) and one from the Ann van Dyk Cheetah center (South Africa) presented with sublingual lesions reminiscent of sublingual papillomas.
