Genomes are organised into DNA loops by the Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes (SMC) proteins. SMCs establish functional chromosomal sub-domains for DNA repair, gene expression and chromosome segregation, but how SMC activity is specifically targeted is unclear. Here, we define the molecular mechanism targeting the condensin SMC complex to specific chromosomal regions in budding yeast.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of different surgical tools on the risk of damage to permanent molars during mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) in infants with micrognathia.
  • A total of 11 patients were reviewed, comparing the use of side-cutting burrs and piezoelectric saws for osteotomy, with side-cutting resulting in higher rates of abnormal molar findings (88%).
  • The results indicate that using a piezoelectric device significantly reduces the risk of injury to the permanent molars in patients undergoing MDO.

Introduction Velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) and craniofacial differences can lead to diminished speech and swallowing function resulting in communication and social challenges throughout childhood. To monitor changes in patients' psychosocial health and velopharyngeal function, the Pediatric Symptom Checklist (PSC) and Velopharyngeal Insufficiency Effects on Life Outcomes (VELO) survey tools can be utilized. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between VPI quality-of-life outcomes and psychosocial disturbances through a comparative analysis of PSC and VELO parental surveys among children followed by a craniofacial team.

Article Synopsis
  • The surgical repair of cleft lip in infants involves correcting the nasal deformity through repositioning of nasal cartilages.
  • Nasoalveolar molding may be used before surgery, while nostril stents can be applied after to help shape the nose.
  • Although the evidence is inconclusive, the benefits of using nostril stents post-surgery appear to surpass the associated risks.
