Comparison of pheochromocytomas and abdominal and pelvic paragangliomas with head and neck paragangliomas.

Objective: To compare clinical, radiologic, and pathologic characteristics, as well as management and outcomes, in a series of pheochromocytomas, abdominal and pelvic paragangliomas, and pelvic paragangliomas with head and neck paragangliomas.

Methods: In this retrospective study, we reviewed charts of all patients seen at our institution between January 1995 and December 2006. We searched pathology and medical record databases under the terms pheochromocytoma, paraganglioma, head and neck tumors, carotid body tumors, glomus jugulare, and neuroendocrine tumors.

Maxillary sinus carcinoma. Natural history and outcome.

Objective: To assess natural history, treatment outcome and pattern of relapse in patients with maxillary sinus carcinoma.

Methods: A review was conducted of the medical records of all adult patients with maxillary sinus carcinoma, who were treated at King Faisal Hospital and Research Centre, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, between January 1990 and December 1999. A total of 60 patients were identified for analysis, 36 men and 24 women; the median age was 58-years (range 23-95).

A study comparing different approaches in managing neck nodes in early carcinoma of the tongue.

Objective: To evaluate elective neck treatment in patients with early stage (T1-2 negative neck node [N0]) squamous cell carcinoma of the oral tongue.

Methods: The medical records of all patients with early stage (T1-2 N0) of oral tongue cancer at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, between January 1980 and December 1997, were identified and retrospectively reviewed.

Results: Our cohort consisted of 93 patients: 45 males and 48 females, with a median age of 60 years.

Cellular schwannoma of the paranasal sinuses: initial report of a case.

Cellular schwannomas are a benign variant of classic schwannomas. Their histologic appearance closely mimics that of malignant peripheral nerve-sheath tumors, which are high-grade sarcomas. In this article, we describe what to our knowledge is the first reported case of a cellular schwannoma of the paranasal sinuses and only the 33rd reported case of any schwannoma at this site.

Early stage carcinoma of oral tongue: prognostic factors for local control and survival.

The purpose of this study was to assess prognostic factors, treatment outcomes and patterns of relapse in patients with early stage (T1-2 N0) squamous cell carcinoma of oral tongue treated primarily by surgery. The medical records of all patients with early stage (T1-2 N0) oral tongue cancer, radically treated at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center between January 1980 and December 1997, were reviewed. Eighty-five patients were identified for analysis, 38 male and 47 female.
