The membranous structure separating the granulosa from theca cells in the developing ovarian follicles of birds is generally perceived as a genuine basement membrane (BM). Previously, we suggested that this membrane is unusual in that it lacks several typical BM components, e.g.

We sought to identify associations of basal metabolic rate (BMR) with morphological traits in laboratory mice. In order to expand the body mass (BM) range at the intra-strain level, and to minimize relevant genetic variation, we used male and female wild type mice (C3HeB/FeJ) and previously unpublished ENU-induced dwarf mutant littermates (David mice), covering a body mass range from 13.5 g through 32.

Disturbance of intracellular trafficking plays a major role in several neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer or Parkinson's disease. The Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS), a life-threatening autosomal recessive disease with frequent mutations in the LYST gene, and its animal model, the beige mouse, are both characterized by lysosomal defects with accumulation of giant lysosomes. Clinically they manifest as hypopigmentation, abnormal bleeding and increased susceptibility to infection with various degrees of involvement of the nervous system.

In egg-laying species, such as the chicken, the mode of transport of lipoprotein particles from the capillary plasma to endocytic receptors on the oocyte surface is largely unknown. Here we show by molecular characterization that the large prominent heparan sulfate proteoglycan of extracellular matrices, termed perlecan or HSPG2 (the product of the hspg2 gene), is a component of ovarian follicles that may participate in this process. However, although normally a major HSPG of basement membranes or basal laminae, in chicken follicles, perlecan is absent from the membranous structure between the theca interna and granulosa cell layers, which to date has been considered a bona fide basement membrane.
