Background: Cough variant asthma (CVA) is characterized by cough as a sole symptom and normal pulmonary function. However, it is unclear whether CVA really common among asthmatic patients with normal forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1). The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of cough alone symptom among the subjects with normal FEV1 and to evaluate their differences from ordinary asthmatic subjects.

Photodynamic therapy is useful as organ-preservation salvage therapy for residual recurrence of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma after chemoradiation therapy. However, the high residual recurrence rate of photodynamic therapy poses a problem. We herein report a patient who underwent photodynamic therapy for recurrence of superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma after chemoradiation therapy.

Background: Cough-dominant or cough-variant asthma is common in Japan. However, it is unclear whether cough and dyspnea, the cardinal symptoms of bronchial asthma, are similarly perceived, and whether these symptoms are linked to pulmonary function tests.

Methods: The subjects were 548 physician-diagnosed naive patients with asthma.

Background: With the introduction of imatinib, a first-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) to inhibit BCR-ABL1 kinase, the outcome of chronic-phase chronic myeloid leukemia (CP-CML) has improved dramatically. However, only a small proportion of CP-CML patients subsequently achieve a deep molecular response (DMR) with imatinib. Dasatinib, a second-generation TKI, is more potent than imatinib in the inhibition of BCR-ABL1 tyrosine kinase in vitro and more effective in CP-CML patients who do not achieve an optimal response with imatinib treatment.

The optimal treatments for relapsed acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) remain equivocal. We conducted a phase 2 study to evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of a sequential treatment consisting of induction and consolidation with arsenic trioxide (ATO), peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) harvest after high-dose cytarabine chemotherapy, and autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Between 2005 and 2009, 35 patients (26 with hematologic and 9 with molecular relapse) were enrolled.
