The FAM13A Long Isoform Regulates Cilia Movement and Coordination in Airway Mucociliary Transport.

Single nucelotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at the locus are among the most commonly reported risk alleles associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other respiratory diseases; however, the physiological role of FAM13A is unclear. In humans, two major protein isoforms are expressed at the locus: "long" and "short," but their functions remain unknown, partly because of a lack of isoform conservation in mice. We performed in-depth characterization of organotypic primary human airway epithelial cell subsets and show that multiciliated cells predominantly express the FAM13A long isoform containing a putative N-terminal Rho GTPase-activating protein (RhoGAP) domain.

Retrograde intramedullary nailing or locked plating for stabilisation of distal femoral fractures? A comparative study of 193 patients.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of distal femoral fracture fixation of two different methods, lateral locking plate (LP) or an Intra-medullary nail (IMN), in patients managed in our institution. More specifically, to assess: (a) if there was a difference in functional outcomes between the LP and IMN groups; (b) whether the rate of complications was different between the two groups.

Methods: Between January 2009 and December 2018 adult patients with distal femoral fractures managed in our unit with either LP or IMN for extra and intra-articular fractures were eligible to participate.

Documentation of the Development of Various Visuomotor Responses in Typically Reared Kittens and Those Reared With Early Selected Visual Exposure by Use of a New Procedure.

A new procedure was used to study the development of gaze (responses to moving targets or laser spots in normal kittens, those that had been reared in total darkness to 6 weeks of age, and others that received a period of monocular deprivation (MD). Gaze responses were observed to all stimuli in normal kittens at between 25-30 days of age and striking responses occurred on the same day or the next. Despite slow acquisition of spatial vision in the dark reared kittens over 3 months, they were able to follow and even strike at moving visual stimuli within a day of their initial exposure to light.

Management of Gustilo-Anderson IIIB open tibial fractures in adults-a systematic review.

Introduction: Open tibial fractures are the most common open long bone fracture, despite this, the management of these complex injuries still remains a topic of discussion amongst orthopaedic surgeons.

Sources Of Data: We searched the EMBASE, MEDLINE and Google Scholar and a systematic review of 7500 articles, leaving 23 after exclusion criteria were applied, in order to analyse the management of open tibial fractures.

Areas Of Agreement And Controversy: Infection was noted to be the most significant concern amongst authors, with definitive external fixation having a high rate of superficial pin-site infection and internal fixation having a high deep infection rate.

Global Assessment of Urological Endoscopic Skills (GAUES): development and validation of a novel assessment tool to evaluate endourological skills.

Objective: To develop and evaluate an assessment tool for endourological skills during simulation including cystoscopy, ureteroscopy (URS) and transurethral resection (TUR) procedures.

Methods: We designed a Global Assessment of Urological Endoscopic Skills (GAUES) tool, comprised of nine endourology task-specific and two global-rating skills items. The tool was developed through two rounds of the Delphi process.
