Article Synopsis
  • * Two days later, an echocardiogram showed a rare finding in the right ventricle, which was later identified as a left ventricular inferior wall pseudoaneurysm that had ruptured into the RV.
  • * The case illustrates that mechanical complications after a heart attack can occur either early (1-2 days) or later (around 5 days) and emphasizes the need for careful interpretation of echocardiograms.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is described as transient, ventricular dysfunction. A relatively rare pathology accounting for 0.02% of hospitalizations, recurrent episodes are even less common, occurring at 1-6%.

The most significant and common cause of anaemia is iron deficiency, which occurs when iron absorption cannot meet the body's demands due to growth, pregnancy, poor nutrition, malabsorption or blood loss. It is estimated that in the UK 11% of the adult population have iron-deficiency anaemia (IDA) and investigation is essential to exclude significant pathology as the underlying cause. It has been shown that IDA is responsible for 57 000 hospital admissions in the UK, and at least 10% of gastroenterology referrals per annum.

Article Synopsis
  • Innate immune responses help manage inflammation caused by cell damage while minimizing excessive reactions.
  • Hsp70, released by damaged cells, can trigger varying immune responses depending on how it interacts with myeloid cell receptors.
  • The study shows that extracellular mouse Hsp70 binds to a receptor complex that includes both an inhibitory receptor (Siglec-E) and an activating receptor (LOX-1), which helps modulate inflammation effectively.

Extracellular heat shock proteins (HSP) play important roles in cell signaling and immunity. Many of these effects are mediated by surface receptors expressed on a wide range of cell types, including immune cells. We have investigated the nature of such proteins by cloning candidate receptors into cells (CHO-K1) with the rare property of being null for HSP binding.
