Article Synopsis
  • The study compares the clinical outcomes of two groups of patients undergoing type A aortic dissection repair: those who received deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA) at temperatures <20°C and those given moderate hypothermic circulatory arrest (MHCA) at 20-28°C.
  • Results showed that the DHCA group had significantly higher rates of complications like acute kidney injury (AKI), delirium, and longer ICU stays compared to the MHCA group.
  • The findings suggest that using MHCA might be protective against certain postoperative issues, potentially improving overall patient recovery outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • A study of 367 cardiac surgery patients examined the impact of the time of day (morning vs. afternoon) on bacterial contamination, wound infections, and overall outcomes post-surgery.
  • No significant differences were found in mortality rates or major adverse events between the two groups.
  • The study also noted that bacterial contamination was similar in both groups, with most detected germs being part of the natural skin flora and wound infection rates showing no significant variation based on surgery timing.

Lymph node metastasis is one of the most important prognostic factors in oral squamous cell carcinoma. In early stage oral cancers, Depth of invasion (DOI) is a predictor for lymph node metastasis. The aim of this study was to evaluate if DOI 4 mm can be considered as a threshold for clinical decision making on elective neck dissection (END) in early oral cancer, by assessing the association of DOI and the risk of occult lymph node metastasis in early Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).

The interaction between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is discussed controversial. In this population-based retrospective analysis including non-emergency CABG in Germany between 2015 and 2021, the aim was to compare in-hospital mortality, hospital length of stay (HLOS), and perioperative ventilation time (VT) in patients affected by COPD and not affected by COPD. In addition, we compared outcomes after off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) and on-pump coronary artery bypass (ONCAB) surgery and outcomes after CABG with a minimally invasive technique with and without cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in COPD patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how the surface roughness of thermoplastic PETG dental appliances affects the growth of Candida albicans biofilms and how an alkaline peroxide disinfectant interacts with these surfaces.
  • Two types of PETG materials (Crystal and Duran) were tested with half subjected to thermal cycling, allowing for the comparison of their surface characteristics and biofilm growth.
  • The results indicate that while surface roughness affects biofilm formation, the disinfectant effectively reduces biofilm development, regardless of the material or the effects of artificial aging on the surfaces.
