Epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS), an autosomal dominant skin disorder, is characterized by skin fragility. Genetically, the majority of cases are related to missense sequence variations in two keratin genes K5 or K14, leading to cytolysis of basal keratinocytes (KCs) and intraepidermal blistering. Progress toward the identification of treatments has been hampered by an incomplete understanding of the mechanisms underlying this disease and availability of relevant and reliable in vitro models recapitulating the physiopathological mechanisms.

Background: After observing a case of plasma exchange-mediated hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection in a kidney transplant recipient, we investigated the relationship between plasma exchange and HEV infection after kidney transplantation.

Methods: A cohort of 263 patients who underwent kidney transplantation from January 1, 2011, through December 31, 2012, was screened for HEV markers, including anti-HEV IgG and IgM antibodies and HEV ribonucleic acid (RNA), on 3 consecutive blood samples: 1 before, 1 with a mean (standard deviation) of 9.5 (9) months, and 1 with a mean (standard deviation) of 18.

Background: Allogenic platelet transfusions (PT) are administered to treat excessive bleeding in patients on P2Y12 receptor inhibitors (RI). We assessed the effect of ex vivo and in vivo PT on platelet activation and aggregation in patients on dual antiplatelet therapy.

Methods And Results: In the Antagonize P2Y12 Treatment Inhibitors by Transfusion of Platelets in an Urgent or Delayed Timing After Acute Coronary Syndrome or Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Presentation-Acute Coronary Syndrome (APTITUDE-ACS) study, patients presenting with acute coronary syndrome or for elective percutaneous coronary intervention, receiving loading doses of clopidogrel (600 mg, n=13 or 900 mg, n=12), prasugrel 60 mg (n=10), or ticagrelor 180 mg (n=10) were included.

[A storyteller in gerontology].

Soins Gerontol

September 2014

Storytelling in geriatrics is a way of contributing to the construction of an alternative to the pharmacological treatment of cognitive disorders. To carry out such an activity, aside from having a repertoire of targeted stories and the talent of a good storyteller, it is important to know how to create a convivial atmosphere where the patient will feel appreciated and valued.

Objectives: This study sought to determine whether red blood cell (RBC) transfusion increases in vivo platelet aggregation and inflammation in coronary and noncoronary patients.

Background: RBC transfusion increases in vitro platelet activation and aggregation in healthy volunteers, providing a possible explanation for the increase in recurrent ischemic events and mortality reported after RBC transfusion in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS).

Methods: Platelet reactivity was measured before and after RBC transfusion in 61 patients (33 with ACS patients and 28 without ACS).
