Objective: Prophylactic ligation of the external carotid artery (ECA) during oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) resection is known to reduce severe postoperative oropharyngeal bleeding events, however, there is limited research on whether bleed rates vary between selective ligation of individual vessels or total ligation of the ECA. This study assesses outcomes related to total versus selective ligation of the ECA in patients who underwent transoral resection for OPSCC of the base of tongue or palatine tonsils.
Study Design: Retrospective review.
Health Care Transit
November 2024
Introduction: The transition from pediatric to adult healthcare is challenging for adolescents and young adults (AYA) with pediatric-onset chronic health conditions. Although barriers faced by AYA during transition are well-documented, previous studies have not considered how migration and settlement impact patient and family experiences.
Objectives: To fill this gap, we conducted a qualitative descriptive study to explore the recommendations for policy and practice from the perspectives of immigrant and refugee AYA living with chronic health conditions in Canada as they transition from pediatric to adult healthcare.
Background: The transition from pediatric to adult care is a period associated with adverse health outcomes (e.g., health care dropout, health deterioration and poor adherence to management) for adolescents and young adults (AYA) with chronic conditions and their caregivers.

Despite the need for engagement with AEA in health research, little is known about how researchers operationalize this engagement. In an effort to enhance transparency in the practices of patient engagement, this commentary details the process of developing a pediatric-adult transition-specific youth advisory council in Alberta: the Transition Research Advisory Council (TRAC).

Methods: A qualitative study was conducted within a pragmatic randomized controlled trial.
