Rosetting, the formation of red blood cell aggregates, is a life-threatening condition in malaria tropica and not yet fully understood. We study rosette stability using a set of microfluidic stenotic channels, with varied narrowing angle and erythrocytes of blood groups O and A. We find reduced ability of a rosette to pass a stenosis without disruption, the longer the tapered part of the constriction and the narrower the stenosis is.

Background: The development of gonarthrosis (GA) involves inflammatory processes; the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is being increasingly mentioned. The body is protected from oxidative damage by the antioxidative barrier with fundamental role being played by antioxidative enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and enzymes involved in glutathione transformations, particularly glutathione peroxidase (GPx). The methods of treatment of cartilage depend on the disease advancement, patient's reactions to pain, disease-related impairment in daily activities, as well as the age and overall health of the patient.

The paper summarises the results to determine the fluxes of different N-compounds within the atmosphere and an aquatic and a terrestrial ecosystems, in Hungary. In the exchange processes of N-compounds between atmosphere and various ecosystems the deposition dominates. The net deposition fluxes are -730, -1270 and -1530 mg Nm(-2)yr(-1) for water, grassland, and forest ecosystems, respectively.

The rate of formation of pentachloro-2-aminodiphenylether (5-PAD) from pentachloro-2-(chloromethylsulphonamido) diphenylether (6-PCSD) by goldfish liver homogenates was studied in a variety of buffers. The highest rate was observed when the homogenate was prepared and assayed in phosphate buffer containing dithiothreitol. The 5-PAD forming activity of liver homogenate preparations from a variety of freshwater fish (goldfish, carp, pike, rainbow trout, perch and eel) showed contrasting species differences.

After dosing goldfish (Carassius auratus) for 2 hr with pentachloro-2-(chloromethyl sulphonamido) diphenyl ether, 6-PCSD, (the major component of the active ingredients of the mothproofing agent Eulan WA New) in the surrounding water, high concentrations of the corresponding amine pentachloro-2-aminodiphenyl ether, 5-PAD, were found in the liver. This suggests that the liver is a primary site of 5-PAD formation in vivo. Homogenates of goldfish liver showed a 5-PAD forming activity when incubated with 6-PCSD; this activity was destroyed by boiling the homogenate or by treatment with trypsin.
