Anastomotic leak occurrence is a severe complication after colorectal surgery. Considering the difficulty of treating these leaks and their impact on patient care, there is a strong need for an efficient prevention strategy. We evaluated a combination of extracellular vesicles (EVs) from rat adipose-derived stromal cells with a thermoresponsive gel, Pluronic® F127 (PF-127) to prevent anastomotic leaks.

Introduction: Low-flow oxygen therapy (LFOT) has been the only option for infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) requiring supplemental oxygen after discharge for years. Nasal high-flow therapy (NHFT) has more recently become available as a home device. We compared the impact of NHFT and LFOT on respiratory morbidity and lung function over the first 4 years in infants with BPD requiring respiratory support post-discharge.

Objective: Ampullary neoplastic lesions can be resected by endoscopic papillectomy (EP) or transduodenal surgical ampullectomy (TSA) while pancreaticoduodenectomy is reserved for more advanced lesions. We present the largest retrospective comparative study analysing EP and TSA.

Design: Of all patients in the database, lesions with prior interventions, benign histology advanced malignancy (T2 and more), patients with hereditary syndromes and those undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy were excluded.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the effectiveness of elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) therapy in improving lung function in people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF), specifically looking at the lung clearance index (LCI) as a sensitive measure.
  • 129 pwCF, aged 12-36, were assessed at the start of ETI and after 6 and 12 months, revealing that while most showed significant improvement in lung function measurements (FEV), a small group did not (15.5% had no significant change).
  • Those with minimal change in FEV had better initial pulmonary function, yet showed improved LCI values post-treatment, highlighting the LCI's role in evaluating ETI effectiveness

Efficient design, production, and optimization of new safe and sustainable by design materials for various industrial sectors is an on-going challenge for our society, poised to escalate in the future. Wood-based composite materials offer an attractive sustainable alternative to high impact materials such as glass and polymers and have been the focus of experimental research and development for years. Computational and AI-based materials design provides significant speed-up the development of these materials compared to traditional methods of development.
