Current publications that are shaping public perception repeatedly claim that residues of plant protection products (PPP) in the environment demonstrate gaps in assessing the exposure and effects of PPP, allegedly revealing the inability of the European regulatory system to prevent environmental contamination and damage such as biodiversity decline. The hypothesis is that environmental risk assessments rely on inappropriate predictive models that underestimate exposure and do not explicitly account for the impact of combinations of environmental stressors and physiological differences in stress responses. This article puts this criticism into context to allow for a more balanced evaluation of the European regulatory system for PPP.

The revised EFSA 2023 Guidance on the risk assessment of plant protection products for birds and mammals emphasises vulnerability as a relevant criterion for focal species (FS) selection rather than prevalence. The EFSA 2023 Guidance suggests to rank FS candidates for each dietary group according to their expected exposure by estimating a species-specific daily dietary dose (DDD). Species experiencing higher exposure would be ranked as potentially more vulnerable and can be identified as FS candidates.

Mixture Assessment Factors (MAFs) have been proposed in the European Union (EU) as a rapid and simple way of protecting aquatic organisms from the combined effects of unintentional chemical mixtures when regulating industrial chemicals under the REACH (EU Regulation on the registration, evaluation, authorisation, and restriction of chemicals) program. A wide range of values has been suggested for the MAF including values of 20 or larger. In this paper we performed a series of case studies using composition data from 46,546 mixtures reported in three surveys of chemicals in EU surface waters.

To characterize the potential for exposure of amphibian terrestrial life stages to plant protection products (PPP), we studied the occurrence and habitat use of adult and metamorph common frogs (Rana temporaria) and common toads (Bufo bufo) in an agricultural landscape in Germany. The four selected study sites were breeding ponds with approximately 80% agricultural land within a 1-km radius. Adults were monitored by radio tracking for two years, and metamorph numbers were assessed for one summer using pitfall traps alongside drift fences.

Background: Postpartum hemorrhage is a significant cause of both maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide and is increasing in incidence. This study aimed to assess improvement and identify shortcomings in trainee performance in different simulation systems in the management of postpartum hemorrhage.

Objective: To perform a pilot study evaluating and comparing high- and low-fidelity simulation models, assessing improvement in repeated performance with high-fidelity mode and identifying mistakes made assessed using Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills and thereby exploring what aspects of emergency management of postpartum hemorrhage should be prioritized in teaching settings and assessing what simulation setup is most effective in achieving competence.
