Objectives: Acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) previously have been associated with in-hospital and long-term mortality of patients undergoing support with venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO). Patient selection criteria and survival prediction scores for VA-ECMO often include AKI or CKD, but exclude patients requiring renal replacement therapy (RRT). The need for RRT in ECMO patients is associated with increased intensive unit care and in-hospital mortality.

Ascending aortic diameter is not an accurate parameter for surgical indication in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). Thus, the present study aimed to identify specific microRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) and their expression levels in aortic wall aneurysm associated with BAV according to severity of medial degeneration and to elucidate the association between the tissue expression levels of the miRNAs with their expression in plasma. Aortic wall and blood specimens were obtained from 38 patients: 12 controls and 26 patients with BAV with ascending aortic aneurysm.

Introduction: Pathogen Inactivation allows to overcome microbial contamination and growth related to storage of platelets concentrates (PC) at room temperature. The aim of our study was to evaluate the platelet storage lesion extending the storage period of pathogen inactivated platelet concentrates over 7 days using an automated cytometry assay panel.

Methods: We analyzed 43 concentrates subjected to pathogen inactivation (CPPI) at 3, 5 and 7 days evaluating: platelet count, mean platelet volume, platelets at low optical density, platelets at high density, GPIIb-IIIa glycoprotein, platelet microparticles, lactate dehydrogenase.
