Computer vision systems have been integrated into facilities dealing with the sorting of household waste. This solution allows for the sorting efficiency improvement and cost reduction. However, challenges associated with the poor annotation quality of existing waste segmentation datasets, unsuitable environment for recognition on a conveyor belt, or limited data for creating an effective and cost-efficient sorting system using visible range cameras significantly limit the application efficiency of computer vision systems.

A sub-terahertz holographic image of a two-dimensional 576-bit data code is produced using a diffractive phase-plate element. The phase plate was designed using a modified Gerchberg-Saxton iterative algorithm to encode a focused image of the data code into a phase modulation profile. The complex phase plate structure is fabricated from polylactic acid using fused deposition modeling, a common three-dimensional-printing technique.

We investigate the turn-on process in a laser cavity where the round-trip time is several orders of magnitude greater than the active medium timescales. In this long delay limit, we show that the universal evolution of the photon statistics from thermal to Poissonian distribution involves the emergence of power dropouts. While the largest number of these dropouts vanish after a few round-trips, some of them persist and seed coherent structures similar to dark solitons or Nozaki-Bekki holes described by the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation.

Mercury telluride (HgTe) thin films with a critical thickness of 6.5 nm are predicted to possess a gapless Dirac-like band structure. We report a comprehensive study on gated and optically doped samples by magnetooptical spectroscopy in the THz range.

Electric control of magnetism and magnetic control of ferroelectricity can improve the energy efficiency of magnetic memory and data-processing devices. However, the necessary magnetoelectric switching is hard to achieve, and requires more than just a coupling between the spin and the charge degrees of freedom. Here we show that an application and subsequent removal of a magnetic field reverses the electric polarization of the multiferroic GdMnO, thus requiring two cycles to bring the system back to the original configuration.
