This case report presents a first trimester pregnant patient who was admitted for obstructive jaundice syndrome (pain in the right hypochondrium, nausea, and vomiting). Initially, because of the risk/benefit ratio of pregnancy, the treatment was medical and the patient was immediately discharged because her clinical condition improved, but she was rapidly readmitted to the surgery department because of worsening symptoms. Emergency surgical intervention (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) under combined spinal and epidural anesthesia (CSEA) was performed to reduce the patient's risks.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFGestational pemphigoid is a rare, autoimmune, subepidermal bullous disease with an incidence of 1 in 50,000 pregnancies, displaying itself through pruritic erythema and urticarial papules and plaques that evolve into tense bullae. Histopathological findings consist of subepidermal vesicles with perivascular eosinophils and lymphocytes, and direct immunofluorescence reveals C3 complement and, more rarely, IgG in a linear band along the basement membrane. The course is usually self-limiting within 6 months after delivery but, later, can be triggered by subsequent pregnancies, menstruation, or treatment with oral contraceptives.

Objective: To determine if change in body position improves oxygen requirements and respiratory mechanics during the transition from total liquid ventilation (TLV) to gas ventilation.
Methods: Fourteen piglets underwent TLV, followed by a 2-hour weaning period under conventional gas ventilation. Subjects were randomized to the experimental group (Rotating - R), that was in prone position between the 10th and 30th minute of weaning, or to the static control group (Supine - S).
