Retinal vascular fingerprints predict incident stroke: findings from the UK Biobank cohort study.

Objective: To investigate the associations between a comprehensive set of retinal vascular parameters and incident stroke to unveil new associations and explore its predictive power for stroke risk.

Methods: Retinal vascular parameters were extracted from the UK Biobank fundus images using the Retina-based Microvascular Health Assessment System. We used Cox regression analysis, adjusted for traditional risk factors, to examine the associations, with false discovery rate adjustment for multiple comparisons.

Neonatal Osteomyelitis.

Osteomyelitis is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition affecting the skeletal system of newborns. The condition is relatively rare in neonates but occurs at higher rates in high-risk pregnancies, in preterm infants, and with the use of invasive devices. As a result of the anatomy and immature immune system of newborns, neonates differ in presentation, diagnosis, and management of osteomyelitis compared to patients of other age groups.

Lower extremity joint contact force symmetry during walking and running, 2-7 years post-ACL reconstruction.

Premature osteoarthritis after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is common among athletes. Reduced knee contact forces after ACLR likely contribute to the multifactorial etiology of the disease. Whether this reduction is accompanied by compensatory increases in joint contact forces (JCF) at adjacent or contralateral joints is unclear.

Quantum illumination using polarization-path entangled single photons for low reflectivity object detection in a noisy background.

Detecting object with low reflectivity embedded within a noisy background is a challenging task. Quantum correlations between pairs of quantum states of light, though are highly sensitive to background noise and losses, offer advantages over traditional illumination methods. Instead of using correlated photon pairs which are sensitive, we experimentally demonstrate the advantage of using heralded single-photons entangled in polarization and path degree of freedom for quantum illumination.

Plasma proteomics show altered inflammatory and mitochondrial proteins in patients with neurologic symptoms of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Persistent symptoms of COVID-19 survivors constitute long COVID syndrome, also called post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC). Neurologic manifestations of PASC (Neuro-PASC) are particularly debilitating, long lasting, and poorly understood. To gain insight into the pathogenesis of PASC, we leveraged a well-characterized group of Neuro-PASC (NP) patients seen at our Neuro-COVID-19 clinic who had mild acute COVID-19 and never required hospitalization to investigate their plasma proteome.
