Objective: To investigate the prevalence and aetiology of hypokalaemia in pregnancy.
Methods: This was a five-year retrospective audit of women who received care at a tertiary hospital, who developed hypokalaemia during pregnancy and within three weeks postpartum. Serum potassium and magnesium levels cause(s) of hospitalization and investigations for hypokalaemia were obtained from hospital records.

Ptyalism gravidarum, or sialorrhoea, is a highly distressing maternal condition characterised by excess salivation and difficulty swallowing saliva, requiring the affected woman to frequently expectorate. The literature is sparse and somewhat conflicting. There are marked geographical and cultural differences in prevalence.

The disorder is characterised by hip pain, reduced mobility, and the risk of fracture, which is significantly higher in pregnant than in non-pregnant individuals. Diagnosis is by magnetic resonance imaging.
