Competition Among Pharmacies as a Determinant of Drug Expenditures.

This study explored and compared the associations between pharmacy competition and drug expenditures by individuals with influenza. This study used a dataset consisting of 6 694 534 individuals who purchased drugs for influenza at pharmacies from 2015 to 2019 in China. Patients' annual average influenza-specific drug expenditures per visit at pharmacies was the outcome variable of interest.

Effects of Social Determinants of Health and Social Support on Surgical Outcomes Among Patients Undergoing Hysterectomy.

Objective: To describe composite 30-day postoperative complication rates among patients undergoing hysterectomy during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and to determine baseline and postoperative mental health symptoms, levels of social support, and socioeconomic status and their association with hysterectomy outcomes.

Methods: This multicenter prospective cohort study at eight centers across the United States enrolled patients who underwent minimally invasive hysterectomy for benign indications during the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients completed preoperative and postoperative surveys assessing mental health (PHQ-9 [Patient Health Questionnaire]), social support (MOS-SS [Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey]), and socioeconomic status (Hollingshead Index [Hollingshead Four Factor Index of Socioeconomic Status]).

Technology as a Fix for the Age-Old Challenge of Aging in Place?

Health system leaders, researchers and the public alike recognize the multiple and often tragic ways in which our health systems continue to fail older adults. We have long been aware of the demographic shifts in our population that are seeing an increasing percentage of the population over the age of 65 years; in fact, up to 30% of the Canadian population is projected to be over 65 years of age by the year 2068 (Statistics Canada 2022). However, we have not yet seen the system-wide adaptations and reforms to health systems to support people to maintain their health as they age.

Advancing 2S/LGBTQ+ Health Equity: A Call for Structural Action.

The social, mental, physical and sexual health of diverse Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and other sexual and gender minority (2S/LGBTQ+) populations across Canada and globally is under threat. In Canada, we are not immune to the rise in divisive and regressive policies and rhetoric that is negatively impacting the lives of 2S/LGBTQ+ people in the US and across the world (HRC Staff 2023; United Nations 2022). Make no mistake, the threats to the human rights and health of 2S/LGBTQ+ communities are growing in Canada as well (Benchetrit 2023).

Demographic and temporal trends in mental health and substance use services provided by primary care physicians in British Columbia, Canada.

Background: As the demand for mental health and substance use (MHSU) services increases, there will be an even greater need for health human resources to deliver this care. This study investigates how family physicians' (FP) contact volume, and more specifically, MHSU contact volume, is shaped by demographic trends among FPs in British Columbia, Canada.

Methods: We used annual physician-level administrative billing data and demographic information on FPs in British Columbia between 1996 and 2017.
