The main feature of vicinal surfaces of crystals characterized by the Miller indices (hhm) is rather small width (less than 10 nm) and substantially large length (more than 200 nm) of atomically-flat terraces. This makes difficult to apply standard methods of image processing and correct visualization of crystalline lattices at the terraces and multiatomic steps. Here we consider two procedures allowing us to minimize effects of both small-scale noise and global tilt of sample: (i) analysis of the difference of two Gaussian blurred images, and (ii) subtraction of the plane, whose parameters are determined by optimization of the histogram of the visible heights, from raw topography image.

Article Synopsis
  • * The disease is characterized by granulomas, which initially show macrophage-lymphocytic infiltration and can progress to epithelioid cell formation and fibrosis, typically found in specific regions of the heart.
  • * Improved diagnostic imaging techniques, such as CT and MRI, have enhanced the ability to diagnose cardiac sarcoidosis, and this article reviews the latest findings and insights from a multidisciplinary team.

Sb is a three-dimensional Peierls insulator. The Peierls instability gives rise to doubling of the translational period along the [111] direction and alternating van der Waals and covalent bonding between (111) atomic planes. At the (111) surface of Sb, the Peierls condition is violated, which in theory can give rise to properties differing from the bulk.

The article presents a study of a two-fluid turbulence model in the Comsol Multiphysics software package for the problem of a subsonic flow around the DSMA661 and NACA 4412 airfoils with angles of attack of 0 and 13.87 degrees, respectively. In this paper, the finite element method is used for the numerical implementation of the turbulence equations.

The strongly correlated electron material, vanadium dioxide (VO2), has seen considerable attention and research application in metal-oxide electronics due to its metal-to-insulator transition close to room temperature. Vacuum annealing a V2O5(010) single crystal results in Wadsley phases (VnO2n+1, n > 1) and VO2. The resistance changes by a factor of 20 at 342 K, corresponding to the metal-to-insulator phase transition of VO2.
