MARIA (magnetism reflectometer with high incident angle) is a world class vertical sample reflectometer dedicated to the investigation of thin films in the fields of magnetism, soft matter and biology. The elliptical vertically focusing guide allows one to measure small samples with a typical size of 1 × 1 cm very efficiently. The double-bounce polarizer and the pumped He SEOP (spin-exchange optical pumping) neutron spin filter cell for analysing the polarization of the reflected neutron beam can be moved into the beam in seconds.

Article Synopsis
  • Understanding the molecular mechanisms of drug adsorption/desorption is crucial for designing effective pharmaceutical formulations using superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) in biomedical applications.
  • Research on the cytostatic drug Mitoxantrone (MTO) revealed that its adsorption to lauric acid-albumin hybrid coated SPIONs (SEON) enhances stability and sustainable drug release compared to uncoated nanoparticles and protein solutions.
  • Techniques like FTIR, DLS, and neutron/X-ray scattering were employed to study MTO interactions with SEON, indicating that MTO molecules are located on the outer surface of the nanoparticle coating, affecting their repulsive interactions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on isolating lysozyme from the hemolymph of two tick species using ultrasound.
  • The ultrasound-extracted lysozyme displayed a much stronger bactericidal effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Micrococcus luteus compared to lysozyme from chicken eggs and ticks without ultrasound treatment.
  • Additionally, breaking down the hemolymph cells contributed to a higher yield of lysozyme production.

Comparative analysis of a pain syndrome severity was done, using a visual analogous scale (VAS), basing on the analysis of performance of various kinds of laparoscopic prosthesis inserting hernioplasty for inguinal hernia, using intraabdominal (intraperitoneal onlay mesh - IPOM) and preperitoneal (transabdominal preperitoneal - TAPP) with establishment of light nets. A pain severity is trustworthy lesser in the IPOM method application--5 and 17.5 points, accordingly.

Spherical high density lipoprotein (sHDL), a key player in reverse cholesterol transport and the most abundant form of HDL, is associated with cardiovascular diseases. Small angle neutron scattering with contrast variation was used to determine the solution structure of protein and lipid components of reconstituted sHDL. Apolipoprotein A1, the major protein of sHDL, forms a hollow structure that cradles a central compact lipid core.
