Background: Proximal interphalangeal injury may result in malalignment of the phalanx axis of motion. In some instances, these fractures are treated with an external fixation method such as Suzuki-type fixation, during which the surgeon must perform X-rays to preserve the phalanx anatomical axis of motion.

Objectives: To assess the correlation between the palmar skin crease and the joint axis of the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) of the fingers opposing the thumb to improve the surgeons' perioperative planning procedure.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral antibiotic use in older adults can disrupt gut microbiota, leading to health issues like infections and chronic diseases.
  • A study involving mice showed that those on a high glycemic diet with antibiotics had significantly lower survival rates due to severe gut damage, unlike those on a low glycemic diet.
  • The low glycemic diet helped maintain a healthier gut microbiome and preserved important bacterial functions, suggesting it could be a helpful strategy to prevent gut issues caused by antibiotics.

Article Synopsis
  • Intramedullary stem extensions are added during revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to improve component fixation and longevity, often using hybrid fixation methods.
  • The study involved a retrospective review of 153 patients re-evaluating the prevalence and impact of radiographic sclerotic lines at the bone-implant interface over a follow-up period of 15 years.
  • Results showed that while 7.8% of patients had sclerotic lines, they did not significantly affect the rates of aseptic loosening, with a notable long-term survivorship rate of 94.8% free from failure due to loosening.

Article Synopsis
  • Primary cardiac tumors (PCTs) like myxomas and lipomas are rare, with lipomas being soft fat masses that can lead to diagnostic challenges.
  • Lipomatous hypertrophy of the atrial septum (LHAS) is a benign condition linked to aging and obesity, distinct from true cardiac lipomas.
  • A case of a true atrial septal lipoma discovered during heart dissection is detailed, highlighting its potential effects on heart function and contributing to the scarce literature on benign primary cardiac tumors.

Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by increased stool frequency, rectal bleeding, and urgency. To streamline the quantitative assessment of histopathology using the Nancy Index in UC patients, we developed a novel artificial intelligence (AI) tool based on deep learning and tested it in a proof-of-concept trial. In this study, we report the performance of a modified version of the AI tool.
