Objective: "Applicant familiarity," or prior knowledge of an applicant, is associated with successful plastic surgery match outcomes. While a research year (RY) enhances academic productivity, mentorship, and specialty exposure, its impact on familiarity and matching at the RY institution remains unclear. This study examines whether a RY improves applicant familiarity and match outcomes at the RY program.

Dysregulated renin-angiotensin system (RAS) signaling contributes to elevated blood pressure (BP), inflammation, and organ damage in systemic arterial hypertension (HTN). We have demonstrated that hypertensive humans and rats exhibit higher expression of classic RAS components and lower expression of counterregulatory RAS components in the lungs compared with normotensive counterparts. Here, we investigated whether BP control could restore the balance between classic [angiotensin I-converting enzyme 2 (ACE)/angiotensin II (Ang II)] and counterregulatory [angiotensin I-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2)/Ang (1-7)] RAS, thereby mitigating lung inflammation.

The past decade has seen remarkable progress in identifying genes that, when impacted by deleterious coding variation, confer high risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), intellectual disability, and other developmental disorders. However, most underlying gene discovery efforts have focused on individuals of European ancestry, limiting insights into genetic risks across diverse populations. To help address this, the Genomics of Autism in Latin American Ancestries Consortium (GALA) was formed, presenting here the largest sequencing study of ASD in Latin American individuals (n>15,000).

Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) is a transmembrane serine exopeptidase abundantly expressed in the kidneys, predominantly in the proximal tubule (PT); however, its non-enzymatic functions in this nephron segment remain poorly understood. While DPP4 physically associates with the Na/H exchanger isoform 3 (NHE3) and its inhibitors exert natriuretic effects, the DPP4 role in blood pressure (BP) regulation remains controversial. This study investigated the effects of PT-specific deletion ( ) and global deletion ( ) on systolic blood pressure (SBP), natriuresis, and NHE3 regulation under baseline and angiotensin II (Ang II)-stimulated conditions in both male and female mice.

Objectives: Button batteries pose a significant threat to young children, and parents and caregivers play an important role in keeping children safe from button batteries, especially in the home environment. However, little is known regarding parent or caregiver perspectives on button battery safety, in particular, the threat they pose to children. The aim of this study was to examine perspectives on button battery safety to enable tailored prevention strategies and to examine parent and caregiver perspectives on button battery safety in the home.
