The relevance of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) in monitoring and evaluating Community-based Rehabilitation (CBR).

Purpose: To examine the relevance of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) to CBR monitoring and evaluation by investigating the relationship between the ICF and information in published CBR monitoring and evaluation reports.

Method: A three-stage literature search and analysis method was employed. Studies were identified via online database searches for peer-reviewed journal articles, and hand-searching of CBR network resources, NGO websites and specific journals.

This paper argues that by analysing language as a mechanism for growth of information (Cann et al. in The Dynamics of Language, Elsevier, Oxford, 2005; Kempson et al. in Dynamic Syntax, Blackwell, Oxford, 2001), not only does a unitary basis for ellipsis become possible, otherwise thought to be irredeemably heterogeneous, but also a whole range of sub-types of ellipsis, otherwise thought to be unique to dialogue, emerge as natural consequences of use of language in context.

Langmuir supercells: a mechanism for sediment resuspension and transport in shallow seas.

Recent measurements at a cabled sea-floor node in 15 meters of water off the coast of New Jersey suggest that Langmuir supercells, Langmuir circulations that achieve vertical scales equal to the water depth under extended storms, are an important mechanism for major sediment resuspension events on the extensive shallow shelves off the eastern U.S. coast.

Chemiluminescent measurement of total urinary nitrogen for accurate calculation of nitrogen balance.

This instrumental method for total urinary nitrogen (TUN) is based on the principle of gas-phase chemiluminescence. Results correlate well with measurements of TUN by the Kjeldahl method, which has long provided the means to calculate nitrogen balances for nutritional management. In recent years, because of speed and convenience of measurement, determination of urinary urea nitrogen (UUN) has been substituted for Kjeldahl TUN.
