The European hedgehog () is a protected species of conservation concern in the UK. In recent years, there have been multiple incidents of fatal encephalitis in captive hedgehogs in wildlife rescue centers associated with the molecular detection of a hedgehog arterivirus (HhAV-1). However, it remains unclear whether the virus is the causative agent of the central nervous system (CNS) lesions.

The hazel dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius) population in the UK continues to decline due to habitat loss, despite reintroductions of captive-bred individuals being conducted nationally for over 30 years. Disease surveillance of captive-bred and wild dormice is performed to identify novel and existing disease threats which could impact populations. In this study, we firstly investigated cause of death in seven hazel dormice found dead in England, through next-generation sequencing identifying a virus closely related to a wood mouse encephalomyocarditis virus-2 (EMCV-2).

Article Synopsis
  • The immune system of Asian elephants is not as well-researched as that of other animals, making understanding their response to diseases like EEHV-HD vital.
  • EEHV-HD, caused by herpesviruses, poses a serious threat to captive Asian elephants, with a strong innate immune response needed to prevent fatal outcomes.
  • The study tested two veterinary immunostimulants, finding they effectively boosted the innate anti-viral immune responses in elephant blood cells, hinting at their potential use in managing EEHV infections.

Tusaviruses in the genus of family were first identified in a diarrhoeic Tunisian child in 2014. Thereafter, high prevalence of a genetically similar virus was demonstrated in faeces from caprine and ovine species in Hungary. Here, we describe an investigation into the cause of scabby lip lesions in a 6 month-old lamb, submitted from a farm experiencing weight loss and scouring in lambs in England.

The structural and dynamic properties of fluids under confinement in a porous medium differ from their bulk properties. This study delves into the surface structuring and hydrodynamic characteristics of oil/thin film carbonated brine two-phase within a calcite channel upon salinity variation. To this end, both equilibrium and non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are utilized to unveil the effect of the carboxylic acid component (benzoic acid) in a simple model oil (decane) confined between two thin films of carbonated brine on the oil-brine-calcite characteristics.
