Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder, mainly comprising two subtypes: ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). IBD, featured by recurrent symptoms and significant morbidity, poses a significant threat to global health and has an adverse impact on quality of life. Currently, there is no curative therapy for IBD, and the available medications are only for managing the disease condition, likely owing to the insufficient understanding of the underlying pathophysiology processes involved in IBD, and the lack of safe and effective medicines.

Introduction: Highly pathogenic coronaviruses (CoVs), such as severe acute respiratory syndrome CoV (SARS-CoV), Middle East respiratory syndrome CoV (MERS-CoV), and the most recent SARS-CoV-2 responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, pose significant threats to human populations over the past two decades. These CoVs have caused a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from asymptomatic to severe distress syndromes (ARDS), resulting in high morbidity and mortality.
Areas Covered: The accelerated advancements in antiviral drug discovery, spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic, have shed new light on the imperative to develop treatments effective against a broad spectrum of CoVs.
Fluorine continues to show its potential applications in drug discovery and development, as reflected by twelve drugs being fluorinated out of the fifty-five approved by the FDA in 2023. This concise review highlights the discovery of each of these fluorine-containing drugs in the past year, including its brand name, date of approval, composition, sponsors, indication, and mechanism of action. The relevant future trend is also briefly discussed.

As a groundbreaking drug discovery approach, RIPTACs work by forming a stable complex with two proteins, one specifically found in cancer cells (target protein, TP) and the other pan-essential for cell survival (effector protein, EP), selectively disrupting the function of the EP in cancer cells and causing cell death. Interestingly, the TPs need not be linked to disease progression, broadening the spectrum of potential drug targets.
