Thyroid tumors occur in many domestic species, but are most common in the dog, in which they are classified as follicular or medullary. During 2012-2016, we received tissue specimens or whole carcasses of 4 dogs with variable enlargement of the thyroid glands. The 2 males and 2 females were of mixed (mongrel) inbreeding, 3-4.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPD-1 is a key negative regulator of CD8 T cell activation and is highly expressed by exhausted T cells in cancer and chronic viral infection. Although PD-1 blockade can improve viral and tumor control, physiological PD-1 expression prevents immunopathology and improves memory formation. The mechanisms driving high PD-1 expression in exhaustion are not well understood and could be critical to disentangling its beneficial and detrimental effects.

This "exhaustion" is coupled to persistent upregulation of inhibitory receptor programmed death-1 (PD-1) (Pdcd1)-key in suppressing antiviral CTL responses. Here, we investigate allelic Pdcd1 subnuclear localization and transcription during acute and chronic lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) infection in mice.

To survive, they must return to a suitable reef habitat within a species-specific time. Strikingly, previous studies have demonstrated that return to home reefs is much more frequent than would be expected by chance.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFCD8 cytotoxic T cells are a potent line of defense against invading pathogens. To aid in curtailing aberrant immune responses, the activation status of CD8 T cells is highly regulated. One mechanism in which CD8 T cell responses are dampened is via signaling through the immune-inhibitory receptor Programmed Cell Death Protein-1, encoded by Pdcd1.
