Detailed theoretical and numerical investigations of the transmission performance of adaptively modulated optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (AMOOFDM) signals are undertaken, for the first time, in optical amplification and chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation free single mode fiber (SMF) intensity-modulated and direct-detection (IMDD) systems using two cascaded semiconductor optical amplifiers in a counterpropagating configuration as an intensity modulator (TC-SOA-CC-IM). A theoretical model describing the characteristics of this configuration is developed. Extensive performance comparisons are also made between the TC-SOA-CC and the single SOA intensity modulators.

Objective: We sought to develop a neural network (NN) to predict the risk for cesarean delivery (CD) in term nulliparas.

Study Design: Using software (BrainMaker for Windows, Version 3.0; California Scientific Software, Nevada City, CA), we trained an NN with 225 patients obtained by chart review and included for nulliparity, singleton vertex > 36 weeks' gestation, and reassuring fetal heart rate on admission.

Background: Chronic and excessive alcohol misuse results in neuroadaptive changes in the brain. The complex nature of behavioral, psychological, emotional, and neuropathological characteristics associated with alcoholism is likely a reflection of the network of proteins that are affected by alcohol-induced gene expression patterns in specific brain regions. At the molecular level, however, knowledge remains limited regarding alterations in protein expression levels affected by chronic alcohol abuse.

This study examined the expression of a neuron-specific cell adhesion molecule, OBCAM (opioid-binding cell adhesion molecule), at both the mRNA and protein levels in the cat primary visual cortex at various postnatal ages, using cDNA array analysis and immunocytochemistry. Results obtained using both methods showed that the expression level of OBCAM was high in young and low in older and adult visual cortex. OBCAM-immunoreactivities were associated predominantly with perikarya and dendrites of pyramidal neurons, and OBCAM-immunopositive neurons were present in all cortical layers.

We studied the kinetics of [3H]lipopolysaccharide ([3H]LPS) (endotoxin) binding to Kupffer cells and hepatocytes at the level of the microtubular system after treatment with gadolinium chloride (GdCl(3)) and colchicine. Liver perfusion in Sprague-Dawley rats involves both portal vein and thoracic inferior vena cava cannulations as inlet and outlet, respectively. The subhepatic inferior vena cava is ligated to prevent perfusate leakage.
