Lipid peroxidation results in release of 4-hydroxy-2,3-trans-nonenal (HNE), which is known to conjugate to specific amino acids of proteins and may alter their function. The effect of HNE on the activities of Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase, Mg(2+)-ATPase, Ca(2+)-ATPase, and calmodulin-stimulated Ca(2+)-ATPase has been studied both in erythrocyte ghosts and in neutrophil membrane preparations. Neutrophil Ca(2+)-ATPase was strongly inhibited by micromolar concentrations of HNE (IC(50) = 12 microM), that means in the range of pathophysiologically relevant HNE levels.

Cranial and spinal infections are severe events that require timely diagnosis and treatment. Physical and neurological examination, laboratory tests and radiological imaging may be insufficient for assessing cranial and spinal septic lesions. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of indium-111 white blood cell (WBC) scan in assessing the presence of leucocytes in intracranial and spinal lesions, and in the diagnosis, management and follow-up of primary, post-traumatic and post-surgical infections.

The association of a pituitary adenoma with a dural arteriovenous fistula supplied by the posterior branches of the middle meningeal artery and draining into the transverse sinus is reported. Among the possible etiopathogenic explanations of such an unusual association, a progressive mechanical obstacle to the dural venous blood drainage to the left wing of the compressed cavernous sinus and subsequent opening of embryonic dural arterio-venous shunts with reversal of flow has been considered.
