A perhabdovirus was isolated from a mortality episode affecting a fish farm in 2019 in Western Europe. This virus was produced in cell culture and was readily detected by a species-specific real-time PCR assay. The near-complete sequence of the virus obtained showed some relatedness with viruses of the species .

Iridoviridae are known to cause disease in sturgeons in North America. Here, histological and molecular methods were used to screen for this family of virus in sturgeons from various European farms with low-to-high morbidity. Some histological samples revealed basophilic cells in the gill and labial epithelia, strongly suggesting the accumulation of iridovirus particles.

Lactic acid bacteria have become a major source of concern for aquaculture in recent decades. In addition to true pathogenic species of worldwide significance, such as Streptococcus iniae and Lactococcus garvieae, several species have been reported to produce occasional fish mortalities in limited geographic areas, and many unidentifiable or ill-defined isolates are regularly isolated from fish or fish products. To clarify the nature and prevalence of different fish-associated bacteria belonging to the lactic acid bacterium group, a collection of 57 isolates of different origins was studied and compared with a set of 22 type strains, using amplified rRNA gene restriction analysis (ARDRA).

Molecular and morphological features of Gyrodactylus specimens from Oncorhynchus mykiss, Salmo trutta and Salmo salar were examined. Sequences from variable region V4 of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene and the ribosomal RNA internal transcribed spacers, produced by the FRS Marine Laboratory, revealed that these were not the same as other well-characterised Gyrodactylus that are common on European salmonids and were in fact a distinct species. Initial morphological examination of the opisthaptor indicated that this species very closely resembles G.
