Unlabelled: The frequency and characteristics of adverse drug events (ADEs) in children hospitalized in the paediatric department of Ullevaal University Hospital, Norway, were determined using intensive monitoring. Of 579 children treated with drugs, 28% experienced ADEs; 7% at the time of admission, 18% during hospitalization and 9% after discharge. All children treated for cancer, 19% treated with anti-infective drugs, 15% treated with antiasthmatics and 10% treated with drugs affecting the nervous system experienced ADEs.

Noradrenaline release, graded by frequency variation of field stimulation (0.1-2 Hz), in atrial myocardial specimens (n=45) from children (n=21) with congenital heart defects, was used to examine the inotropic responses of graded, receptor-selective, endogenous stimulation. Muscle trabeculae subjected to autonomic blockage by timolol, prazosin and atropine showed a slight positive force-frequency relationship (staircase phenomenon).

Aims: To investigate the ductus venosus flow velocity (DVFV) in infants with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN); to evaluate the DVFV pattern as a possible diagnostic supplement in neonates with PPHN and other conditions with increased right atrial pressure.

Methods: DVFV was studied in 16 neonates with PPHN on days 1-4 of postnatal life using Doppler echocardiography. DVFV was compared with that in mechanically ventilated neonates with increased intrathoracic pressure, but without signs of PPHN (n=11); with neonates with congenital heart defects resulting in right atrial pressure (n=6); and with preterm neonates without PPHN (n=46); and healthy term neonates (n=50).

Aim: To assess ultrasonographically the flow pattern and the time of postnatal closure of ductus venosus in preterm infants < or = 32 weeks.

Methods: Thirty-three preterm infants < or = 32 weeks were studied within the first 1 to 5 days of life and followed every second day with ultrasound until no flow was detected either through the ductus venosus or the ductus arteriosus.

Results: The ductus venosus was closed in only 9% by day 3, in 40% by day 8 and 88% by day 18.

To analyse the possible influence of endogenous muscarinic activity on the inotropic effects of endogenously released noradrenaline in field stimulated myocardial preparations from atria of children with congenital heart defects, we studied the maximal effect of the muscarinic antagonist atropine (1.5 micromol L(-1)). Maximal force of contraction increased by 12.
