Environmental flows in a future climate: Balancing hydropower production and ecosystem rehabilitation in the Ume River system, Sweden.

Hydropower is central to renewable electricity systems, but degrades ecosystems, calling for environmental flow schemes to enhance the ecological status of river systems. Environmental flow assessments need to account for climate change, since climate-driven changes in runoff affect both hydropower operation and riverine ecosystems. Here, we quantify expected changes in hydropower production and environmental benefits of introducing environmental flows in a large regulated river system in northern Sweden in a future climate.

Let it flow: Modeling ecological benefits and hydropower production impacts of banning zero-flow events in a large regulated river system.

Hydropeaking, defined as rapid and frequent changes in flow to optimize hydropower production, is an increasingly common procedure negatively affecting lotic habitats in riverine ecosystems. An important aspect of hydropeaking is zero-flow events, occurring when hydropower stations are stopped due to low energy demand or low electricity prices. We quantified the ecological benefits and consequences for hydropower production of restricting zero-flow events.

To investigate the relationship between gonadotroph function and ultrastructure, we have compared, in parallel in female mice, the effects of several different mutations that perturb the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Specifically, serum and pituitary gonadotrophin concentrations, gonadotrophin gene expression, gonadotroph structure and number were measured. Follicle-stimulating hormone β knockout (FSHβKO), follicle-stimulating hormone receptor knockout (FSHRKO), luteinising hormone receptor knockout (LuRKO), hypogonadal (hpg) and ovariectomised mice were compared with control wild-type or heterozygote female mice.

Health information: what can mobile phone assessments add?

In healthcare, pain assessment is a key factor in effectively treating postoperative pain and reducing the risk of developing chronic pain. The overall aim of this study was to investigate whether a mobile phone support system can be used as a basis to continuously document patients' health information in real time and provide conditions for optimal, individual pain management after cholecystectomy and hysterectomy procedures.In this pilot study, two randomly selected groups of patients provided information about their pain for one week postoperatively.

Anticoagulation after liver transplantation: a retrospective audit and case-control study.

Anticoagulation may in the future become a therapeutic option for the prevention of liver fibrosis, such as due to recurrent hepatitis C virus infection after liver transplantation. Currently, there are other indications for anticoagulation after liver transplantation but no data regarding its safety. The objective of the study was to audit the safety of anticoagulation after liver transplantation.
