Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how gut microbial metabolites (GMM), specifically phenylacetylglutamine (PAGln), are linked to cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in people with alcohol use disorder.
  • In experiments with mice, researchers found that chronic alcohol consumption led to changes in gut microbes and increased PAGln levels, which were associated with cardiovascular issues.
  • PAGln was shown to cause heart and blood vessel problems independent of alcohol, indicating that it plays a significant role in the development of CVD related to alcohol consumption.

Background: Hospital presumptive eligibility (HPE) emergency Medicaid programs offset patient bills at hospitalization and can provide long-term Medicaid coverage. We characterized postdischarge outpatient health care utilization among HPE Medicaid trauma patients and identified patient access facilitators and barriers once newly insured. We hypothesized utilization would be increased among HPE trauma patients compared with other HPE patients, but that challenges in access to care would remain.

Background: Menopause is a timely opportunity to screen for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and intervene with healthier lifestyles. We investigated the association between premature/early menopause and the likelihood of CVD and whether a healthy lifestyle is associated with a lower likelihood of CVD in menopausal woman.

Methods: The Sax Institute's 45 and Up Study prospectively recruited participants aged ≥45 years (n=267 357) between 2005 and 2009 (New South Wales, Australia).

Background: Piperacillin-tazobactam is used in patients with cystic fibrosis to treat recurrent respiratory infections. Exposure is associated with a high frequency of non-immediate hypersensitivity.

Objective: To assess the applicability of the lymphocyte transformation test (LTT) for the diagnosis of piperacillin hypersensitivity and the influence of desensitization on piperacillin-specific T-cell responses.

Burn injuries undergo a complex healing process in which progressive spreading of epithelial damage can lead to secondary complications such as wound infection, which is a major driver of mortality among burn patients. We recently reported that burning larval zebrafish triggers dysregulated keratinocyte dynamics compared to mechanical injury. Here, we investigate keratinocyte behaviour following burn injury and the subsequent potential for microbial colonisation of burn wounds over time.
