Hard-to-heal (chronic) wounds are a challenge to wound care professionals, a burden to the health service and negatively impact affected individuals' quality of life. In research on second language (L2) processing, the processing of reference has been highlighted as a domain of particular difficulty, but the source of the difficulty is not well understood. The present study examines whether differences in the pronominal systems of the first language (L1) and L2 impact processing. We take a novel approach, testing a group of intermediate-advanced L2 learners in both their L1 (Mandarin Chinese) and L2 (English), allowing us to directly examine whether L2 learners show similar or different patterns when processing the L1 and L2.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the effectiveness of two surfactant administration methods—INtubate-RECruit-SURfactant-Extubate (IN-REC-SUR-E) and less invasive surfactant administration (LISA)—on improving BPD-free survival in preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS).
  • A total of 382 preterm infants, born at 24-27 weeks' gestation and not intubated at birth, will be randomly assigned to either method within the first 24 hours of life. The primary outcome being measured is a combination of death or bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) at 36 weeks' postmenstrual age.

Objectives: About 10 million individuals in USA presented annually in the emergency department (ED) with chest pain or with signs and symptoms of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The advent of point of care (POC) devices, able to measure high sensitivity troponin, are a very interesting tool in the ED setting for its rapid turnaround time (<10 min).

Methods: The present study evaluates the diagnostic performance of the Atellica VTLi (Siemens) in real life setting using the clinical data derived from integrated diagnoses of emergency room staff and cardiologist and in comparison with standard laboratory hs-cTnT assay (Cobas 8000, Elecsys, Roche).

The Amelogenin sex test included in forensic DNA typing kits has the potential to identify congenital conditions such as differences/disorders of sex development (DSD). It can also reveal mismatches between genotypic sex and gender marker in identity documents of transgender persons who obtained legal gender recognition. In a 13-year case history of paternity/kinship tests, involving n = 962 females and n = 1001 males, two mismatches between Amelogenin sex test (male) and gender marker (female), and three cases of chromosomal DSD (Klinefelter syndrome) were observed.
