Background: As milder cases of adolescent depression do not meet treatment thresholds for specialist mental health services, young people often receive support from non-qualified professionals in third-sector/voluntary agencies. Early psychological interventions to meet growing demand with limited resources are crucial.
Objectives: The study aimed to explore the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of interpersonal counselling for adolescents by (1) assessing the feasibility and acceptability of trial procedures; (2) exploring the delivery of, and differences between, interpersonal counselling for adolescents and treatment as usual; (3) evaluating the extent of contamination of the control arm and if it should be mitigated against in a future trial; and (4) investigating whether the interval estimate of benefit of interpersonal counselling for adolescents over treatment as usual in depression post treatment includes a clinically significant effect.
The immune system plays a crucial role in tissue repair and regeneration. Macrophages have been identified as master regulators of the early immune response and healing outcome, by orchestrating the temporal nature of the initial inflammation phase and coordinating the fate of stem/progenitor cells involved in regeneration. However, traditional in-vitro models for the study of macrophages often fail to fully replicate the complexity of the in-vivo microenvironment, therefore generating models which do not fully capture the extensive spectrum of macrophage behaviour seen in native tissues.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFNrf2 is a master transcriptional regulator of a number of genes involved in the adaptive response to oxidative stress. Among the genes upregulated by Nrf2, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) has received significant attention, given that the products of HO-1-induced heme catabolism have well established antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This is evidenced in numerous models of inflammatory and autoimmune disease whereby induction of HO-1 expression or administration of tolerable amounts of HO-1 reaction products can ameliorate disease symptoms.
