Background: The present multicenter study aimed to survey the patients' experiences in relation to the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of periodontitis according to current treatment routine.

Methods: Patients (N = 268) treated for plaque-related periodontitis were enrolled in two groups: group 1 received primary probing of pocket depths (PD 1) and/or primary scaling and root planing (SRP 1); group 2 consisted of patients who were scheduled in the different centers for recall PD/scaling/subgingival instrumentation. Data collection included a full periodontal status, anesthesia employed, procedure time, and patient self-completed questionnaires to assess their previous and current experience of pain and discomfort during anesthesia and periodontal treatment.

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the psychometric properties of two generic health-related quality of life (HRQoL) instruments, the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) in a group of patients with chronic peripheral neuropathic pain (PNP). The sample consisted of 126 adults (56 men and 70 women) with PNP following a lesion of a peripheral nerve, spinal nerve or nerve root or patients with post-herpetic neuralgia. The battery of tests included visual analogue scales (VASs) for pain assessment and global rating of health and verbal rating scales of pain and other symptoms, as well as patient descriptors.

The present study was undertaken to assess the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and burden of illness due to pain and its treatment for patients with peripheral neuropathic pain (PNP). It is the first step in finding reliable instruments/targets to evaluate treatment outcome in this patient population. Study population consisted of 126 patients suffering from neuropathic pain due to a peripheral nerve or root lesion, recruited from two multidisciplinary pain clinics.

The characterization of naturally occurring variations in the human genome has evoked an immense interest during recent years. Variations known as biallelic Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) have become increasingly popular markers in molecular genetics because of their wide application both in evolutionary relationship studies and in the identification of susceptibility to common diseases. We have addressed the issue of SNP genotype determination by investigating variations within the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS) using pyrosequencing, a real-time pyrophosphate detection technology.
