Ceramic prostheses used as a columella.

Ceramic stems, their lateral end capped with a modelled ossicle, or ceramic prostheses manufactured with a cap-shaped head were used as a columella from the stapes footplate to the tympanic membrane or a fascia graft in 41 ears operated on during 1982-1985. Six ears had no membrane perforations and no severe disease of the tympanic mucosa. Twelve ears underwent primary operations for cholesteatoma and 23 ears had revision surgery.

Penetration of trimethoprim--sulfadiazine into middle ear fluid in secretory otitis media.

Thirty-nine middle ear fluid samples from 23 patients with chronic secretory otitis media were studied. The patients received 3 doses of 3 mg of trimethoprim and 5 mg of sulfadiazine per kg body weight before tympanostomy, the last dose being given 80-270 min (mean 142 min) prior to operation. Penetration of erythromycin stearate into maxillary sinus mucosa and secretion in chronic maxillary sinusitis.

The penetration of oral erythromycin stearate (Abboticin), administered in a dosage of 500 mg three times a day, into the maxillary sinus mucosa and secretion was studied in 15 patients (22 sinuses) operated on for chronic maxillary sinusitis. Treatment of zygomatic fractures: internal wiring-antral-packing-reposition without fixation.

Fifty-two patients with zygomatic fractures were examined clinically and roentgenologically 1 to 4 years after treatment. Of these patients, 15 were treated with wiring fixation, 26 with antral packing using plastic tubing, and 11 with reduction only, without fixation. In the last group, the hospital stay was the shortest.

Concentration of cephalexin in maxillary sinus mucosa and secretion.

Twenty patients hospitalized for unilateral or bilateral sinus surgery were given 500 mg or 15 mg/kg body weight of cephalexin by mouth two hours before operation. Samples of serum, sinus mucosa and secretion for cephalexin concentrations were taken during operation. There was a large variation in the mucosal and secretion concentrations and no definite correlation with serum levels.
