More than 10 million Europeans show signs of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a transitional stage between normal brain aging and dementia stage memory disorder. Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to identify early clinical features of new-onset refractory status epilepticus (NORSE) patients to guide treatment during their initial hospitalization at Helsinki University Hospital from 2007 to 2018.
  • - Researchers analyzed 19 adult NORSE patients, categorizing them into three subgroups: viral encephalitis, febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES), and afebrile NORSE, discovering distinct characteristics among each group that influenced treatment approaches.
  • - Findings revealed that FIRES patients, primarily younger and presenting with respiratory symptoms and normal brain imaging, required more intensive treatments and had longer hospital stays compared to other NORSE patients, suggesting the need for further studies to validate these preliminary results.
