The inflammasome plays multifaceted roles in cancer, but less is known about its function during premalignancy upon initial cell transformation. We report a homeostatic function of the inflammasome in suppressing malignant transformation through Ras inhibition. We identified increased hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) proliferation within the bone marrow of inflammasome-deficient mice.

Vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) is a rare but serious public health concern. We describe a VRSA case in North Carolina, USA. The isolate from the case belonged to the USA600 lineage and clonal complex 45.

Design of a Low-cost Radiation Weather Station.

Combining a traditional weather station with radiation monitors draws the public's attention to the magnitude of background radiation and its typical variation while providing early indications of unplanned radiological releases, such as nuclear power plant accidents or terrorist acts. Several networks of combined weather and radiation monitoring sensors exist, but these fail to be affordable for broad distribution. This work involves creating an affordable system to accumulate data from multiple locations into a single open-source database.

A modular platform for bioluminescent RNA tracking.

A complete understanding of RNA biology requires methods for tracking transcripts in vivo. Common strategies rely on fluorogenic probes that are limited in sensitivity, dynamic range, and depth of interrogation, owing to their need for excitation light and tissue autofluorescence. To overcome these challenges, we report a bioluminescent platform for serial imaging of RNAs.

Appropriateness of small molecule agents for patients with IBD of childbearing age - a RAND/UCLA appropriateness panel.

Background: Many women of childbearing age with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) require advanced therapies. While biologics are largely low risk during pregnancy, the novel small molecules tofacitinib, filgotinib, upadacitinib and ozanimod (TFUO) have shown concerning teratogenic effects, and decreased fertility in animal studies. Therefore, their use in women of childbearing age needs careful consideration.
