Background: The beneficial effects of application of a fixed dose beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP) and formoterol fumarate (F) for the treatment of severe chronic obstructive disease (COPD) has been amply proven in well controlled clinical trials. Whether this also holds for real-world conditions and in such a heterogeneous patient population as is encountered in Bulgaria remained to be investigated.
Methods: In an observational, non-interventional study, 441 Bulgarian patients with severe COPD who were enrolled at 36 sites across the country received extrafine BDP/FF-combination therapy using the NEXThaler® DPI or the Foster® pMDI over a period of 16 weeks.
Previous studies have shown that autoantibodies to heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) are elevated in a significant proportion of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who are more likely to have renal disease and a low C3 level. Using samples from 24 patients, we searched for glomerular deposits of HSP90 in renal biopsy specimens from seven patients with lupus nephritis and 17 cases of glomerulonephritis from patients without SLE. Positive glomerular immunofluorescent staining for HSP90 was observed in six of seven cases of SLE and positive tubular staining in two of seven SLE patients.

A reverse dependence of HSP90 induction time was found on a wide range of cisplatin concentrations (0.5-10 microM), which proved to be cytostatic up to 48 h of continuous treatment.

The binding properties of affinity-purified anti-HSP antibodies were compared with those of natural antibodies specific for other self antigens, including anti-thyroglobulin and anti-myoglobin autoantibodies, by using semiquantitative immunoblotting, with solubilized proteins from normal liver tissue as antigens, and cross-blot analysis using purified self proteins. Affinity-purified anti-HSP90 antibodies were polyreactive and the non-HSP90-specific fraction of normal IgG was depleted in its natural autoantibody content.
