The orphan nuclear receptor Nr4a1 has complex biological functions and has been implicated in numerous diseases, including cardiovascular disease. While protective in atherosclerosis and myocardial ischemia, Nr4a1 has been shown to cause cardiac fibrosis in non-ischemic adverse remodeling of the heart. However, mechanisms underlying these actions are still poorly understood.

Introduction: Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn) is occasionally implicated as a cause of intra-abdominal infection (IIASpn) that can be 1) spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) in elderly patients with previous peritoneal disease, associated with cirrhosis, in most of the cases 2) associated or adjacent to an intra-abdominal organ or postsurgical. (IIAbq) 3) peritonitis in previously healthy young women (PHYW). Our objective is report 18 cases of IIASpn describing: clinical presentation, comorbidities, need for surgery, microbiological findings, sensitivity of Spn to antimicrobials, therapeutic behavior, and evolution.

Those who have chronic health conditions are often required to spend considerable amounts of money and time undergoing physiological tests and activity monitoring to support, stabilize, and manage their health. This disease burden is only amplified in pediatric populations.

We considered whether this loss of SP also predisposes the heart to non-ischemic diabetic cardiomyopathy in the form of fibrosis and hypertrophy. We report that diabetic Lepr mice have reduced serum SP and that administration of exogenous replacement SP ameliorated cardiac fibrosis.

The histamine 3 receptor (HR) is known to be cardioprotective during acute ischemia by acting to limit norepinephrine release. However, a recent study reported that myofibroblasts isolated from the infarct zone of rat hearts responded to HR activation by up-regulating collagen production.
