Impact of High- and Low-Pass Acoustic Filtering on Audiovisual Speech Redundancy and Benefit in Children.

Objectives: To investigate the influence of frequency-specific audibility on audiovisual benefit in children, this study examined the impact of high- and low-pass acoustic filtering on auditory-only and audiovisual word and sentence recognition in children with typical hearing. Previous studies show that visual speech provides greater access to consonant place of articulation than other consonant features and that low-pass filtering has a strong impact on perception on acoustic consonant place of articulation. This suggests visual speech may be particularly useful when acoustic speech is low-pass filtered because it provides complementary information about consonant place of articulation.

Many software packages have been developed to assist researchers in drawing directed acyclic graphs (DAGs), each with unique functionality and usability. We examine five of the most common software to generate DAGs: TiZ, DAGitty, ggdag, dagR, and igraph. For each package, we provide a general description of its background, analysis and visualization capabilities, and user-friendliness.

Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome and Nutcracker Syndrome as the Presentation of Crohn's Disease in a Young Patient: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Superior mesenteric artery syndrome and nutcracker syndrome are rare vascular complications most often seen after marked weight loss caused by compression of the duodenum and left renal vein between the superior mesenteric artery and the aorta, respectively. The coexistence of superior mesenteric artery syndrome and nutcracker syndrome has been rarely reported. Herein, we present the case of a 16-year-old male with intermittent periumbilical abdominal pain, bilious vomiting, and weight loss who was found to have both of these vascular complications of significant weight loss as the initial presentation of Crohn's disease.

Detection of sensitivity and vestigiality of presumptive tests for swabbed blood stains.

It is a common practice in forensic casework to use presumptive tests for blood stains before DNA extraction and testing. Stains are usually swabbed and then the swabs are sent for analysis. The Kastle-Meyer (KM) and Leucomalachite green (LMG) presumptive tests for blood are widely used, and their sensitivities have been thoroughly tested in the literature in solution and directly on stains, but not on swabbed stains to mimic casework.
