BACKGROUND Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) can result in severe disease requiring mechanical ventilatory support. A subset of these patients, however, demonstrate refractory hypoxemia/hypercarbia requiring veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO) as adjunctive therapy. The primary goal of V-V ECMO is a "bridge" to recovery of native lung function; however, patients may progress to irreversible pulmonary damage requiring lung transplantation.

Although chirality is critical for molecular properties and functions, experimental quantification of chirality is lacking. Herein, we performed cyclic voltammetry (CV) under polarized magnetic fields to provide a unified scale to quantify and compare DNA chirality. We observed the largest electron spin polarization in DNA structures with opposite chiral senses, which is consistent with the effect of chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS).

Thermoplastic polyimides (TPIs) are promising lightweight materials for replacing metal components in aerospace, rocketry, and automotive industries. Key TPI attributes include low density, thermal stability, mechanical strength, inherent flame retardancy, and intrinsic fluorescence under UV light. The application of advanced manufacturing techniques, especially 3D printing, could significantly broaden the use of TPIs; however, challenges in melt-processing this class of polymer represent a barrier.

Article Synopsis
  • National data shows an increasing use of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected organ donors for lung transplants in the US, prompting a study on rejection rates between HCV-viremic and uninfected donors.
  • The study reviewed 135 lung transplant patients, finding that those receiving organs from HCV-viremic donors developed acute HCV infections but were successfully treated without serious complications.
  • Results indicated that HCV-viremic donors had lower rates of significant rejection (5.9%) compared to HCV-negative donors (11%), with 100% one-year survival in the former group versus 95.8% in the latter.

Cryopreserved ram sperm is highly sensitive to oxidative stress by reactive oxygen species (ROS) which impair sperm function and integrity. Antioxidants such as cysteine can mitigate the effect of ROS, although the optimal concentration or timing of supplementation is unknown. This study aimed to determine the effect of concentration and timing of cysteine supplementation on the integrity and function of cryopreserved ram spermatozoa.
