Here, we report a rapid and accurate optical method for detecting cells from liquid samples in a label-free manner. The working principle of the method is based on the interference of parts of a conical laser beam, coming from a single-mode optical fiber directly, and reflected from a flat glass surface. The glass is functionalized by antibodies against the cells to be detected from the liquid sample.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed 300 initial robotic thoracic surgeries at the National Institute of Oncology, focusing on postoperative outcomes and complications.
  • Key findings showed a low rate of complications, shorter intensive care stays, and better lymph node removal with robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) compared to traditional video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS).
  • The results suggest that RATS is a safe and effective technique, enhancing surgical staging due to the increased number of lymph nodes removed.

The nucleocapsid (N) protein of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a viral structural protein that is abundant in the circulation of infected individuals. Previous published studies reported controversial data about the role of the N protein in the activation of the complement system. It was suggested that the N protein directly interacts with mannose-binding lectin-associated serine protease-2 (MASP-2) and stimulates lectin pathway overactivation/activity.

Article Synopsis
  • Prenatal exposure to specific components of cannabis, like THC and CBD, has been linked to increased risks of neuropsychiatric disorders, affecting both males and females differently.
  • In a rat model study, offspring exposed to these cannabinoids showed low birth weight and distinct behavioral changes related to anxiety and social cognition during adolescence.
  • Analysis of brain regions involved in cognitive development revealed that prenatal cannabinoid exposure disrupts the endocannabinoid system, leading to potential long-term neurodevelopmental issues.

A great progress has been made in the development and use of lab-on-a-chip devices to model and study the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in the last decade. We present the main types of BBB-on-chip models and their use for the investigation of BBB physiology, drug and nanoparticle transport, toxicology and pathology. The selection of the appropriate cell types to be integrated into BBB-on-chip devices is discussed, as this greatly impacts the physiological relevance and translatability of findings.
