Emergency physicians should be comfortable treating most dental and related infections. In this article, we outline recommended techniques to perform a dental examination, explore common pathologies, recommend pain and antibiotic management strategies and review common pitfalls. How to avoid overprescribing opioid analgesics is discussed in depth, along with recent studies to support this strategy.

Resurgence of tuberculosis: implications for emergency nurses.

An emergency nurse is often the first person with contact with patients with suspected or known TB when they come to the emergency department. With rapid recognition of signs and symptoms of active TB and prompt implementation of precautions, emergency nurses can reduce the transmission of the "greatest killer of mankind" to other patients, visitors, health care workers, and ourselves.

Pancreatitis.

Pancreatitis is a common but rather poorly understood entity most often associated with alcohol abuse or biliary tract disease. Despite the availability of a variety of diagnostic tests and imaging techniques, the diagnosis of pancreatitis continues to be primarily a clinical one. Of major concern to the emergency physician is distinguishing pancreatitis from other, potentially lethal, causes of abdominal pain, and identifying those patients with severe pancreatitis who are at risk for a complicated course secondary to the remote systemic effects of the disease.

Ontogeny of the barley plant as related to mutation expression and detection of pollen mutations.

Clustering of mutant pollen grains in a population of normal pollen due to premeiotic mutational events complicates translating mutation frequencies into rates. Embryo ontogeny in barley will be described and used to illustrate the formation of such mutant clusters. The nature of the statistics for mutation frequency will be described from a study of the reversion frequencies of various waxy mutants in barley.
