The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) plays an important role in the aggressiveness and therapeutic resistance of many cancers. Targeting mTOR continues to be under clinical investigation for cancer therapy. Despite the notable clinical success of mTOR inhibitors in extending the overall survival of patients with certain malignancies including metastatic renal cell carcinomas (RCCs), the overall impact of mTOR inhibitors on cancers has been generally disappointing and attributed to various compensatory responses.

Machine learning-based ABA treatment recommendation and personalization for autism spectrum disorder: an exploratory study.

Autism spectrum is a brain development condition that impairs an individual's capacity to communicate socially and manifests through strict routines and obsessive-compulsive behavior. Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is the gold-standard treatment for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, as the number of ASD cases increases, there is a substantial shortage of licensed ABA practitioners, limiting the timely formulation, revision, and implementation of treatment plans and goals.

Objective determination of peripheral edema in heart failure patients using short-wave infrared molecular chemical imaging.

Significance: Peripheral pitting edema is a clinician-administered measure for grading edema. Peripheral edema is graded 0, 1  +  , 2  +  , 3  +  , or 4  +  , but subjectivity is a major limitation of this technique. A pilot clinical study for short-wave infrared (SWIR) molecular chemical imaging (MCI) effectiveness as an objective, non-contact quantitative peripheral edema measure is underway.

The UMLS Knowledge Source Server: an experience in Web 2.0 technologies.

The UMLS Knowledge Source Server (UMLSKS), developed at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), makes the knowledge sources of the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) available to the research community over the Internet. In 2003, the UMLSKS was redesigned utilizing state-of-the-art technologies available at that time. That design offered a significant improvement over the prior version but presented a set of technology-dependent issues that limited its functionality and usability.

Plug-and-play UMLS knowledge source server using web services and portlets.

The UMLS is large and complex and presents significant challenges in retrieving information in a comprehensive way. Typical users of the UMLSKS (UMLS Knowledge Source Server) run the gamut in terms of knowledge of the UMLS and retrieval needs from the UMLSKS. Even though we as developers of the UMLSKS have always strived to create a truly modular and flexible system, we felt that the available technology until recently was not mature enough to create a loosely coupled, plug-and-play UMLSKS.
