Report from the first Tanzania Liver Cancer Conference: a call for action to unite in the fight against liver cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa, 17-18 March 2023, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The first Tanzania Liver Cancer Conference (TLCC2023) took place on 17-18 March 2023 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania with the aim of raising awareness among healthcare providers on the problem that liver cancer poses to the Tanzanian population and the urgent need to address this important issue. The conference focused on the following agenda items: 1) to build awareness among local healthcare providers on the status of liver cancer in Tanzania and the available diagnostic and management options, 2) to update Tanzanian healthcare providers on the current standard of care for liver cancer provided in developed countries and recent advancements in liver cancer care and 3) to promote an inclusive and multidisciplinary approach in research and the clinical care of patients with liver cancer in Tanzania. TLCC2023 was preceded by community-facing pre-conference activities, including screening 684 community members for hepatitis B virus free of charge.

Do Dosiomic Features Extracted From Planned 3-Dimensional Dose Distribution Improve Biochemical Failure-Free Survival Prediction: an Analysis Based on a Large Multi-Institutional Data Set.

Purpose: The objective of this work was to investigate whether including additional dosiomic features can improve biochemical failure-free survival prediction compared with models with clinical features only or with clinical features as well as equivalent uniform dose and tumor control probability.

Methods And Materials: This retrospective study included 1852 patients who received diagnoses of localized prostate cancer between 2010 and 2016 and were treated with curative external beam radiation therapy in Albert, Canada. A total of 1562 patients from 2 centers were used for developing 3 random survival forest models: Model A included only 5 clinical features; Model B included 5 clinical features, equivalent uniform dose, and tumor control probability; and Model C considered 5 clinical features and 2074 dosiomic features derived from the planned dose distribution of the clinical target volume and planning target volume with further feature selection to determine prognostic features.

Patient's characteristics, management practices and outcome of re-laparotomies in a tertiary hospital in Tanzania.

Background: Relaparotomy is an important indicator of the safety and quality of laparotomy in any surgical setting. Despite this, its measure in many low- and middle-income countries is scarce, Tanzania included. Understanding its existence will help curb it and mitigate its adverse outcomes by systematic improvement strategies.

An Integrated Portable Multiplex Microchip Device for Fingerprinting Chemical Warfare Agents.

The rapid and reliable detection of chemical and biological agents in the field is important for many applications such as national security, environmental monitoring, infectious diseases screening, and so on. Current commercially available devices may suffer from low field deployability, specificity, and reproducibility, as well as a high false alarm rate. This paper reports the development of a portable lab-on-a-chip device that could address these issues.

Effect of clinical signs, endocrinopathies, timing of surgery, hyperlipidemia, and hyperbilirubinemia on outcome in dogs with gallbladder mucocele.

Gallbladder mucocele (GBM) is a common extra-hepatic biliary syndrome in dogs with death rates ranging from 7 to 45%. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the association of survival with variables that could be utilized to improve clinical decisions. A total of 1194 dogs with a gross and histopathological diagnosis of GBM were included from 41 veterinary referral hospitals in this retrospective study.
