Background: Extensive studies have been conducted on the in vitro effects of diaspirin-crosslinked hemoglobin (DCLHb) in biochemical, hematologic, hemostatic, and blood banking (immunohematologic) methods. The absence of red cell antigens or plasma and/or serum antibodies allows DCLHb to be used as "universal-donor" material. This study evaluates the effects of DCLHb on the accurate assessment of the immunohematologic profile (ABO and Rh blood grouping, antibody screen, and crossmatching).

We establish criteria for anesthetic forehead flap reconstructions and evaluate the effect of mathematical models and computer simulation of the operation in preoperative and perioperative planning. We study a case series of 13 patients in an academic tertiary referral medical center. Most patients had nasal defects after Mohs' surgery for tumor ablation.

Background: Prestorage white cell (WBC) reduction in blood components may decrease the incidence of adverse reactions and improve component quality. A bottom-and-top system with an integral third-generation WBC-reduction filter has been studied.

Study Design And Methods: Whole blood was collected from 30 healthy donors: from 20 by using a blood container system with an integral filter and from 10 controls by using a standard blood container system.

Unusual presentations of lymphangioma.

L ymphangioma is a rare but potentially life-threatening disease, particularly in children. Three unusual cases of lymphangioma located in the infratemporal fossa, submaxillary gland, and cervicomediastinal regions are presented. These unusual sites illustrate that lymphangiomas may be found at sites distant from the locations of the embryological lymph sacs.

We have defined conditions permitting the in vitro growth of human laryngeal papilloma cells at the air-liquid interface. Using this model system, retinoic acid has been found to modulate the differentiation of human laryngeal papilloma cells along two different pathways. At low concentrations of retinoic acid [10(-9) mol/L and 10(-8) mol/L], the cells formed a stratified squamous epithelium with a differentiation-specific protein staining pattern identical to that found in vivo.
