Aim: Sarcopenia is associated with poor prognosis in adult oncologic patients, with little evidence of this association in pediatric population, including hepatoblastoma.

Methods: Retrospective study in patients with hepatoblastoma, divided into those with or without sarcopenia. Sarcopenia was assessed by measuring psoas muscle area (PMA) at L4-L5 level on the CT/MR and defined as z-score values ≤ 2.

Article Synopsis
  • Surgical site infection (SSI) is a common complication after appendectomy in children, prompting a study to identify predictive factors, specifically focusing on the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR).
  • A retrospective study was conducted from 2017-2020, analyzing demographics, symptom onset, lab tests, and surgery details of 1,136 children who underwent appendectomy, revealing that higher NLR and longer symptom duration are linked to increased SSI.
  • The study found NLR to be a significant predictor of SSI, with a cut-off point of 9.8 yielding high sensitivity (77.8%) and specificity (72.7%), making it an effective marker for assessing infection risk post-surgery.
