Vignettes: an innovative qualitative data collection tool in Medical Education research.

This article describes how to make use of exemplar vignettes in qualitative medial education research. Vignettes are particularly useful in prompting discussion with participants, when using real-life case examples may breach confidentiality. As such, using vignettes allows researchers to gain insight into participants' thinking in an ethically sensitive way.

Utilisation of Learning Analytics to Identify Students at Risk of Poor Academic Performance in Medical Schools.

Introduction Identifying students at risk of failure before they experience difficulties may considerably improve their outcomes. However, identification techniques can be costly, time-intensive, and of unknown efficacy. Medical educators need accessible and cost-effective ways of identifying at-risk students.

Exploring the use of Rasch modelling in "common content" items for multi-site and multi-year assessment.

Rasch modelling is a powerful tool for evaluating item performance, measuring drift in difficulty over time, and comparing students who sat assessments at different times or at different sites. Here, we use data from thirty UK medical schools to describe the benefits of Rasch modelling in quality assurance and the barriers to using it. Sixty "common content" multiple choice items were offered to all UK medical schools in 2016-17, and a further sixty in 2017-18, with five available in both years.

Development of an IntelliCage-based cognitive bias test for mice.

The cognitive bias test is used to measure the emotional state of animals with regard to future expectations. Thus, the test offers a unique possibility to assess animal welfare with regard to housing and testing conditions of laboratory animals. So far, however, performing such a test is time-consuming and requires the presence of an experimenter.
